Required documents

If you are ultimately conditionally selected for a Chevening Scholarship, you must submit all the required documents to stay in the process.

English language requirements

To receive a Chevening Award, all applicants must demonstrate that they have met the language requirement for Chevening by July 12, 2019. We recommend that all applicants meet the English language requirement as quickly as possible by:

  • Take an English language test
  • The Claiming of an exemption based on the UKVI-exempt categories

If you cannot prove that you have reached the required level for the English language by 12 July 2019 or cannot prove that you are eligible for an exemption, your application will not be successful.

English language tests

You are free to do multiple tests to meet the English language requirement by Chevening. Please note that Chevening does not pay for costs related to testing in English. You are responsible for booking and paying the costs associated with these tests.

The English language test must be taken at one of the providers on or after October 1, 2016. If you do not have an existing qualifying test certificate, it is your responsibility to ensure that you have booked a test date so that you can obtain the required results achieve.

Applicants are not allowed to attend pre-session courses to meet the Chinese language requirement. You must take one of the approved English language tests unless you fall into one of the exempt categories.

Candidates are not allowed to register for pre-sessional courses to meet the English language requirements of their university or other conditions of a university offer. Any offer from a university with a requirement to attend a pre-session course will be considered conditional.

In some countries, the availability of test centres is limited, so we recommend organizing a test as soon as possible. If there are no English test centres in your country, you may have to travel to a neighbouring country to take a test. Consult the country page for more information.

Please note that the lead time for tests varies in English:

  • IELTS results are available in 13 days
  • Academic PTE results are available within five working days
  • TOEFL results are available for around ten days
  • Trinity results are available in 14 days

Test results in English are sometimes withheld or delayed due to standard auditing procedures performed by the test provider.

Don’t forget to prepare in advance for your English language test. Tips for preparing the tests and practising test papers are available on all test provider websites.
